The Kite Runner Meeting

Please see the menu for our Book Club meeting below!

What were your general thoughts on the book?

"Afghans like to say: Life goes on, unmindful of beginning, end...crisis or catharsis, moving forward like a slow, dusty caravan of kochis [nomads].”

How true do you think this is for the characters in the book?

What do you think about Amir and Hassan’s friendship?

- Why is Amir so afraid to be Hassan’s true friend?

- Why is he always testing Hasan’s loyalty?

- Why does Amir resent Hassan?

Do you think the statement “like father like son” is true for Baba and Amir?

Do you think there was a significance to the numerous physical deformities mentioned in the book? (Ali’s leg, Hassan’s lip, Farid’s hand)

Outside of escaping Afghanistan, what was the significance of America to Amir and Baba? How do their experiences differ?

Why is kite running so important and what does it stand for?

Read the first paragraph and the final page of the book. What do you think about how the story was framed?

"In Afghanistan, yelda is the first night of the month of Jadi, the first night of winter, and the longest night of the year... Ali swore if you ate watermelon the night of yelda, you wouldn't get thirsty in the coming summer."

2oz Cosmic Soul Dry Gin

1 1/2 oz watermelon juice

1 1/2 oz lemonade

1/4 oz lime juice

Combine all ingredients in a shaker with ice. Shake until chilled. Strain into a tumbler filled with ice. Garnish with mint.
